‘Lew,’ as he was popularly known, enlisted as Boy in 1915 and was posted to the 10th Reserve Cavalry Regiment, on the Curragh.
He joined the 8th Hussars on their return from Germany in 1919 and proceeded with them to India and served subsequently in Mesopotamia and Egypt.
He was promoted to Band/Cpl in York in 1925 and to Trumpet Major in Hounslow in 1933, which rank he held until being posted home from the Western Desert in 1941.
He was then appointed RQMS to serve on troopships and held this appointment until the end of the war when he took his discharge.
He was an accomplished instrumentalist and a popular member of the Sgt’s Mess, skilled in the art of snooker and billiards, and became a staunch supporter of the Regimental Association.
