The museum staff and a volunteer visited ‘A’ Squadron of the Queen’s Royal Hussars at Castle Martin tank ranges and had a marvellous day out.

Soldiers from The Queen’s Royal Hussars are currently utilising the vast ranges at Castle Martin in Wales to conduct their annual live firing exercise.

Over the past few weeks intensive exercise they will be tested on individual drills, crew cohesion, teamwork and target accuracy.

The Challenger 2 is a British main battle tank in service with the armies of the United Kingdom, Oman and Ukraine. It was designed and built by the British company Vickers Defence Systems (now known as BAE Systems Land & Armaments).

The Challenger 2 was considered to be one of the best protected tanks in the world, but as nears its 30th year in service it will soon be replaced by the Challenger 3.

A big thank you to the Squadron Sergeant Major WO2 Blakey for inviting the museum team and special thanks to Lt Alastair Cuthbert for hosting us and laying on an exciting programme of events .

The last time the Curator fired on this range the Squadron Leader was Alastair’s father!
