Major Murray-Smith has commanded ‘B’ Squadron for over 3 years. During this time his squadron has distinguished itself in action in Burma and Italy. Major Murray-Smith’s powers of leadership and coolness in action throughout this long period have been an inspiration to all under his command.

His squadron particularly distinguished itself during the operations from June to Oct 44 where under very trying and difficult conditions and over very hilly country this squadron gave the most effective support to Polish infantry and were the first to enter PESARO.

During the recent operations, Apr 24-30, Major Murray-Smith’s squadron were in support of 8 Ind Div and although DD tanks were an untried weapon, his squadron swum the PO and the ADIGE and gave most effective support to the Ghurkas in three actions in which many prisoners were taken, and reached VENICE among the leading troops without the loss of a single tank.

This feat was entirely due to Major Murray-Smith’s initiative, leadership and powers of command which are of the highest order.
