On 31 Aug 42, near EL ALAMEIN, this officer was in command of a rear-guard squadron.

By his clear orders, skillful dispositions and entire disregard of danger he successfully covered the withdrawal of infantry and guns from the attack of enemy tanks in superior numbers and personally directed a counter attack on enemy tanks with this object.

Throughout the day he continued to command his squadron with the greatest resolution and offensive spirit.
