Peter died on 20 February 1985. He joined the Army in 1946 and the 8th Hussars in May 1947 when they were stationed in Lingen. He was due to transfer to the 4th Hussars in 1948, but in the event, this did not happen until 24 October 1958!

Sgt P.T. O'Beney

He returned with the Regiment to Leicester in February 1948, went with them to Korea in October 1950, where he served with ‘B’ Squadron. He remained with the Regiment in Germany, firstly in Luneburg, where he married Patricia, and on amalgamation at Hohne. His forte was Radio, on which subject he was a very competent instructor.

In 1961 he left the Regiment to go as a Permanent Staff Instructor to the North Irish Horse. Unfortunately, Peter never rejoined the Regiment but finished his service in various ERE appointments until taking his discharge in 1969. His last posting at Bovington coincided with the Regiment’s time there as RAC Centre Regiment, so his old chums were able to meet up with him again.

Peter was a friendly, cheerful person, who worked quietly behind the scenes and was a good Mess member. He had a great sense of humour, took great pride in his Regiment and gave a lot to it.

He was one of that select bunch of NCOs who fell foul of the Curfew Regulations in force in BAOR in 1952, but like the majority of those who temporarily lost rank and seniority under this Regulation, it did not take him long to regain his place on the Ladder.
