‘Timber’, who died on 14 February 1986, joined the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars in February 1949 whilst they were stationed at Leicester East Airfield.

For a time he was a member of the Provost staff in the company with, amongst others, Peter Wright. On the reforming of ‘C’ Squadron, Timber was lucky enough to be one of those selected to join the squadron.

He moved with the main party to Korea on ‘Empire Fowey’, leaving Southampton on the 12th October 1950.

He took part in the Battle of the Imjin and was slightly wounded.

He arrived in Luneburg in March 1952, staying only until July as he had contracted Malaria in Korea (obviously not having rolled his sleeves down at 1800 hours and taken his Paludrine). He finished his service at the Gunnery School, Lulworth in January 1954.

He was involved in a motor accident in 1970 in which he broke his neck and was left semi-paralysed.

He managed to attend a few Reunions, sometimes with an old ‘C’ Squadron chum, Bert Gates.

Timber was a true ‘Irish Hussar’ who will be missed by his contemporaries.
