Lt Ted Paul, Hussar without a Steed:
Paul was attempting to tow the lame Centurion, and his tank had its turret traversed back to shoot behind it.
By extraordinary bad luck – a million to one chance – a Chinese bullet ignited one of the phosphorous smoke grenades in its launcher on Paul’s turret.
Burning liquid seethed into the air intakes. As the Centurion brewed up, the crew jumped clear. Paul, tankless, picked up a carbine lying on the battlefield and continued to engage the enemy.
